Program Sea Turtle Nesting Ostional Beach
VOLUNTEER PROGRAM FOR THE CONSERVATION OF THE SEA TURTLES AND THEIR ARRIVALS AT OSTIONAL BEACH
Description of the Project:
Ostional Beach is located within Ostional National Wildlife Refuge, and is a sandy beach, habitat of a wide variety of organisms, such as crustaceans, mollusks, birds and reptiles, including the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) and at occasions Leatherback Turtles (Dermochelys coriacea), and the Galapagos Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas), ALL of which are endangered or critically endangered, such as the Leatherback Turtle (UICN, 1995).
Description of program:
The main reason leading to the creation of this Conservation Project was the existence of natural and anthropic factors (stealing of eggs, unorganized visitation, artificial lighting, natural predators, tides, high water levels of nearby rivers, excessive tree trunks on the beach, among others), which all together was destroying almost a 100% of the sea turtle nests deposited on this beach.

Tasks carried out by the volunteers
- Cleaning of the beaches
- Cleaning of the town and sports field
- Collaborate with Rodrigo Morera, a biologist of Minae
- Collection of data and patrolling. (only with ADIO)
- Registering of general information
- Liberation of newborn turtles.
- English classes at Ostional elementary school.
